'Hummelfjell' is a collaboration between Alexander and the Norwegian musician, Maria Yli Myre. In Alexander's words:
"I received an email from someone in Norway called Maria. She introduced herself, and said she'd ‘made a recording of some melodies’ when listening to my piano piece, Snøhetta. Inspired by the mountain, Hummelfjell, in Eastern Norway, she went on to write that 'the lyrics are my own as I heard them while looking at this mountain, where I was, while recording it.’
I remember putting on the headphones to listen, touched that someone had been inspired by my music to compose something. Snøhetta is one of Norway's largest mountains, and I wrote the piece when staying close to its lower slopes, while a north wind was driving cold rain and banks of cloud past the windows. I pressed the playback button, not sure what to expect. It might, perhaps, be a poorly made recording of something completely at odds with my own creativity. But I was immediately drawn into the music, carried away by it back into the Norwegian mountains that inspired me so deeply years ago, and I felt Maria's words and music were so sensitively woven into my original piano piece. I felt inspired to share it more widely the moment I listened to it.
And the recording, made by Maria in her cabin, was perfect. You can almost hear the surrounding mountains in the spaces between the notes. So we kept it, and that original recording is what you hear in the release.”
The single is being released in 2025 to mark ten years since Alexander's 650km pilgrimage from Oslo to Trondheim in 2015. With beautiful artwork by Alexander's brother, Edward C Campbell - which represents the two mountains of Snøhetta and Hummelfjell - the combined work is a powerful and heartfelt evocation of the landscapes that inspired it.
Lyrics - In Full
I vinternatten er vi lys
I vinternatten er vi lys
I vinternatten er vi lys
Kjenner freden i vårt hus
I vårt hus
Ved de store hvite fjell
Finner vi ly
I vårt hus
I vinternatten er vi lys
I vårt hus
Mens vinden flyr forbi
Kjenner bruset av glede i vårt hus
Kjenner gleden bre seg ut
Kjenner bruset av glede
Kjenner gleden bre seg ut
Kjenner gleden bre seg ut
Kjenner bruset av glede i vårt hus
Kjenner freden bre seg ut
Kjenner freden bre seg ut
I denne tid av is og snø
Kjenner freden bre seg ut
Freden bre seg ut
Lyrics (English translation)
In the winter night we are light
Feel the peace in our house
Near the large white mountains we are finding shelter
While the wind flies by
Feeling the effervescence of joy
In our house
Feeling the peace spreading out
In this time of ice and snow
