Portraits of Earth

Following on from the success of Sketches Of Light, Alexander released a second collection of solo piano music in 2016, titled Portraits Of Earth. In the sleeve notes he writes:

‘I chose the titles because nature has always been a source of wonder for me. Naming it in this way is a wish to acknowledge this, and to dedicate the album to the beautiful place that we all share - the living world we call Earth.’

The album was recorded at Crear house, a remote setting on the west coast of Scotland. Alexander writes that:

‘The silence of the place was complete. Not an empty silence, but a living vibrant quietness. It was the silence of a sea at rest, of hazy mountains and endless skies… it seemed inseparable from the room and the sounding of the piano, and for me is as clear in the recordings as the music itself.’

A few months later he returned to Crear with film-maker Hugh Carswell to shoot the beautiful video for Song Of The Evening.

The artwork for the album was inspired by the view from the recording studio of the Paps of Jura and is painted by Alexander’s brother, Edward.
